First Mode

About the mode

The first mode is according to the Greek tradition, the Dorian mode. The mode belongs to the diatonic system. In the music peces the sound is marked with Pa , which sets Pa as the base note. The reflecting sound for this mode is noted with either pa or ke

Scale

First Mode uses the diatonic scale, starting from the note RE( ΠΑ, in Greek) The scale is shown in the next diagram:

Master and ending notes

In eirmologika pieces the master notes are Pa and Di; in stiherarika Pa and Ga or Ke and Ni. In papadika Pa, Ga, Di, and Ke. In eirmologika the ending notes are in the note Pa, in stiherarika the ending notes are also Pa. In papadika the ending notes are also in Pa.


Plagal of First Mode

About the mode

The plagal of first mode is according to the Greek tradition, the Under-Dorian mode. The mode belongs to the diatonic system. In the music peces the sound is marked with Pa , which ascend the base note from Pa to Ke. The reflecting sound for this mode is noted with pa or ke.

Scale

The plagal of First mode uses the diatonic scale, similarly to the First mode. The note Zo is usually chanted with flat.

Master and ending notes

In eirmologika pieces the master notes are Ke and Ni; in stiherarika and papadika Pa, Di, and Ke. In eirmologika the ending notes are in the note Ke, in stiherarika the ending notes are Di and Pa. In papadika the ending notes are in the note Pa.
